“SEO-friendly website” appears in almost every web design quote, yet it is rarely explained. Put simply, it is a website built so that Google can easily crawl and understand the content and users have a good experience — the two conditions for a page to have a chance at ranking well.
Here is a technical checklist you can use to review your own website or check during acceptance.
Speed and mobile experience
- Pages display well on every screen size, with readable text and buttons large enough to tap.
- Images are compressed and served in modern formats such as WebP and AVIF, with fixed dimensions so the page does not “jump” while loading.
- Unnecessary JavaScript is avoided and Core Web Vitals are in the good range.
URL structure and navigation
- URLs are short, lowercase, without special characters and describe the content, for example
/en/web-design. - One URL format is used consistently (with or without a trailing slash) and canonical tags are declared.
- Breadcrumbs and a clear menu help both users and Google understand the site structure.
Content and headings
- Each page has exactly one H1 containing the main topic.
- H2 and H3 headings follow a logical order without skipping levels.
- Content answers the searcher’s question, with keywords used naturally — no stuffing.
Meta tags
- A unique title and meta description for every page.
- Open Graph tags so shared links look good on social networks.
- For multilingual websites:
hreflangtags pointing to the matching translations.
Sitemap, robots.txt and structured data
- A
sitemap.xmlfile listing every page that should be indexed. - A
robots.txtfile that does not accidentally block important pages. - Structured data (JSON-LD) such as Organization, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and Article helps Google show richer search results.
Internal linking
Service, project and article pages should link to each other with descriptive anchor text. This helps Google discover new pages faster and understand which pages matter most.
Conclusion
Technical SEO is the foundation: it does not push a website to the top on its own, but without it even great content struggles to rank. When choosing a web design partner, ask them to commit to the items above in their quote.
